VP Education

The VP Education is responsible for ensuring effective representation for students on academic matters.

Key Sabbatical Officer responsibilities

Represent students

Ø       Represent individual students, referring to Advice Centre where appropriate
Ø       Represent students to the University and local community
Ø       Attend University Liaison Meeting and Student Consultative Committee
Ø       Complete all reporting requirements – to students, the University and outside bodies – relevant to the Officer’s areas of responsibility

Be a member of the Executive Committee

Ø       Attend induction and relevant training
Ø       Be a trustee of UBSU
Ø       Attend Executive meeting monthly and Student Officers’ Committee at both campuses
Ø       Lead a priority campaign as identified by the Exec
Ø       Work to implement UBSU’s strategic plan
Ø       Meet monthly with General Manager to review progress
Ø       Comply with UBSU policies as they relate to being an employee of UBSU, including those contained in the Staff and Health & Safety handbooks

Communicate with students and promote UBSU

Ø       Be easily contactable by students on all main campuses
Ø       Spend time talking to students on the different campuses
Ø       Commit to surveying students through Question of the Week and the Annual Student Survey
Ø       Act as mentor for designated student officers
Ø       Attend Student Representative Councils (SRC), Campus Student Representative Councils (CSRC) and Annual General Meeting (AGM)
Ø       Encourage student participation in UBSU activity
Ø    Increase numbers of candidates and voters for by- and general elections

Key portfolio responsibilities:

Represent students on educational issues

Ø           Represent individual students on educational issues, referring to Advice Centre where appropriate
Ø           Support students with academic offences hearings, appeals and complaints
Ø           Represent students collectively to the University on educational matters
Ø           Attend Faculty Board meetings
Ø           Sit on Board of Governors, Marketing and Communication Board of Governors and Academic Board
Ø           Attend Teaching Quality and Standards meetings
Ø           Liaise with Learning Resources

Organise and develop Course Representation

Ø           Organise course representative system and liaise with the University
Ø           Develop positive relationships with University teaching and learning staff
Ø           Establish and support the Faculty representative system
Ø           Work to ensure course representatives are elected in a democratic manner
Ø           Develop methods to recruit and train course representatives
Ø           Ensure course representative handbook is up-to-date and received by each course representative
Ø           Facilitate the promotion of course reps to the student body to ensure students can recognise their representatives

Educational development

Ø           Promote opportunities for students to utilise UBSU activities to their educational advantage
Ø           Liaise with the University to ensure that UBSU is up-to-date with the changes in the delivery of education, e.g. distance learning, web-based learning, e-portfolios and HEAR

Co-ordinate with the Advice Centre

Ø           Monitor the pattern of cases in the Advice Centre to inform a proactive and strategic approach to supporting students
Ø           Chair the Education Committee
Ø           Organise education awareness initiatives with support of Advice Centre and Campaigns Officers e.g. Plagiarism Awareness, or others in response to current issues/NUS agenda

Bedford campus duties

Ø           Attend Campus Management Group meetings
