VP Union and Community Development 

The VP Union and Community Development is responsible for developing the UBSU profile, representation at Outsites and links with local communities.

Key skills and qualities for this role include:

- Ability to innovate and strategise
- Willingness to work in Aylesbury, Butterfield and Putteridge Bury on                                                                     a regular basis

Key Sabbatical Officer responsibilities

Represent students

Ø       Represent individual students, referring to Advice Centre where appropriate
Ø       Represent students to the University and local community
Ø       Attend University Liaison Meeting and Student Consultative Committee
Ø       Complete all reporting requirements – to students, the University and outside bodies – relevant to the Officer’s areas of responsibility

Be a member of the Executive Committee

Ø       Attend induction and relevant training
Ø       Be a trustee of UBSU
Ø       Attend Executive meeting monthly and Student Officers’ Committee at both campuses
Ø       Lead a priority campaign as identified by the Exec
Ø       Work to implement UBSU’s strategic plan
Ø       Meet monthly with General Manager to review progress
Ø       Comply with UBSU policies as they relate to being an employee of UBSU, including those contained in the Staff and Health & Safety handbooks

Communicate with students and promote UBSU

Ø       Be easily contactable by students on all main campuses
Ø       Spend time talking to students on the different campuses
Ø       Commit to surveying students through Question of the Week and the Annual Student Survey
Ø       Act as mentor for designated student officers
Ø       Attend Student Representative Councils (SRC), Campus Student Representative Councils (CSRC) and Annual General Meeting (AGM)
Ø       Encourage student participation in UBSU activity
Ø    Increase numbers of candidates and voters for by- and general elections
Ø       Work flexible hours as required to fulfil responsibilities

 

Key portfolio responsibilities

 

Develop representation for Outsites

Ø         Represent students at three Outsites: Aylesbury, Butterfield and Putteridge Bury
Ø         Develop UBSU strategy for effective representation for Outsites in consultation with students and staff
Ø         Ensure provision for Outsites is included for main events e.g. Freshers' Week, Freshers' Fayre, Annual Student Meeting, Christmas Ball, Elections, May Ball
Ø         Develop Campus Student Representative Councils for Outsites by working with VP Democracy and Development

Develop UBSU

Ø         Investigate and implement innovative means of raising the profile of UBSU and meaningfully engaging with members in response to changing student demands and requirements
Ø         Coordinate Question of the Week and the Annual Student Survey
Ø         Develop the Sports Strategy by working with the University and Student Activities Coordinators
Ø         Develop an Environmental and Ethical strategy by working with VP Welfare

Develop local community links

Ø         Champion UBSU’s Raise and Give activities, including Sports and Societies' Charity Initiative
Ø         Build and maintain relationships with local community agencies for the main campuses and Outsites e.g. Police Community Support Officers, Pubwatch, Resident Liaison Group
Ø         Develop positive working relationship with Liberty Living in Bedford and Luton
Ø         Develop relationship with local councils and MPs, lobbying where necessary
Ø         Coordinate with VP Welfare for the development of the above relationships

Ensure diverse opportunities for engagement

Ø         Chair the Student Activities Committee
Ø         Create new opportunities for the inclusion and engagement of under-represented groups

Bedford campus    duties

Ø         Attend Resident's Liaison Group
Ø         Attend Campus Management Group
