Council Tax and Students

Do students pay council tax?

Full-time students are not required to pay council tax and will not be included when counting the number of adults who live in a property. If all the residents are students the property will be exempt from council tax.

If you are a full-time student you will need to get an Exemption Certificate from your Faculty Office (if you are studying at Luton) or the Registry Office, room P020 (if you are studying at Bedford) and give this to your local council tax office.

If you are studying at any other site you can call the Students’ Union Advice Centre if you are unsure where to go for a certificate. Please note that your status must be recorded on the University system as fulltime, and that if you are being sanctioned by the University for debt you may not be able to get the certificate. Part-time students are not exempt and have to pay council tax. If you suspend your studies or change your status in any way you may not be exempt. Always check your status with the Council if you are in any doubt.
