► Moving out of your accommodation

Moving out of your accommodation

There are lots of things to organise when you move out of your accommodation. To avoid losing money from your deposit or being charged for anything unnecessarily, try to follow the information in this leaflet.

Checklist

· Before moving out you should do a thorough clean. Get all those marks off the walls, clean the cooker and fridge. If you have been asked to turn the fridge off, you should leave the door open or it could become very smelly, even if you have cleaned it, and don’t forget about the bathroom

· Hoover and shampoo the carpets if necessary

· Return furniture to the place indicated on the inventory

· Tidy the garden and remove any of your rubbish

· Make sure you meet the owner/agent to check off the inventory. If the landlord won’t check and sign the inventory, get an independent witness to do it instead

· Ensure that the landlord or agent tells you exactly what deductions are going to be made from your deposit. If there is any disagreement between you and landlord/agent, you should seek advice as soon as possible

· Take meter readings and notify the relevant utility services: gas, electricity, water and telephone

· Pay your final bills and send copies to your landlord or agent when you leave

· Hand back all the keys (doors, windows, shed etc.) or you will be charged for replacements (ask for a receipt)

· Take photographs or videos (dated if possible) as proof of the condition of the property and its contents

· Notify the University of your new address

· You can get your mail forwarded by paying a fee to Royal Mail (info available at your local Post Office)
