► Bedford Bar

Campaign

Bedford bar campaign

Rationale

The numbers of students living on the Bedford campus has quadrupled since the opening of the new accommodation.

There is little social space on the campus.

Prospective students at open days ask where the bar is and are unimpressed when informed that they have to go into town.

The idea of a Bedford bar is supported by University staff on site.

A motion in support of the Bedford bar was passed at a 2007 SRC.

A motion in support of the Bedford bar was passed at the 2008 AGM.

Progress reports

Action Taken 2007-08

The issues of space were discussed with Estates and a number of options were looked into. The issue was raised at Campus Management Group (CMG) and there was general support that there should be a bar on campus.

Three possible locations for a bar where identified and a paper was taken to CMG appraising these options. Meetings were held to discuss these options with Estates, however little progression. A scoping document for the project was written and taken to the Student Union University Liaison group. Along with this meeting and a meeting with Pro Vice Chancellor Bedford a working group was established. This comprised of Estates and the Pro Vice Chancellor Research & Enterprise, which focused on the use of the Pavilion (G Block) as the location for an SU bar.

A capital bid submission and proposal was then written to be submitted by estates along with a bid to renovate changing rooms, thus freeing up the Pavilion site. This proposal is also being taken to VCMG by the Pro Vice Chancellor Research & Enterprise.

Action Taken 2008-09

The new Pro Vice Chancellor for the site has produced a strategy for development of the site. Although this doesn’t take the bar forward, it is in direct response to the pressure applied by UBSU for such an approach. It provides a framework into which the bar proposal can be developed. It will also make clearer the availability of otherwise of the present buildings for development.

Development of the rooms behind the Students’ Union space at Bedford is being considered. UBSU is conducting research into the wishes of students concerning these areas. Increased social, non‑bar, space may be available.

UBSU is organising a protest march from Bar Soviet to the Bedford campus to highlight the situation. This to take place when the VC is on site on 12th February 2009.
